Harmful role of television

Have you ever thought about the role of television in our life? A glimpse at this issue is enough to understand the fact that this role is magnificent. We often lack time to visit our friends, to have guests, to go for a walk, etc. Our TV set is in more privileged position. No mater how tired we are, how little free time we have, we always have time to watch TV. All of us have already heard many times before that television is harmful for both our mental and physical health. However, it is the easiest way to relax and divert our attention form all our current problems. At first sight this explanation seems unpersuasive. We can enumerate many other types of activities which can help us to relax and have a good time. For example, we can mention different kinds of sport, plying chess or simple going for a walk and breathing fresh air. These activities seem more attractive and amusing. Despite this we prefer to sit before the TV screen and stare at it apathetically. Yes, apathetically! This is the key word, which explains completely our choice in favour of television. All other activities demand our direct participation and this is the main point. We are sometimes too lazy to participate in games, plays etc. We are reluctant to take active part in leisure activities. We prefer to observe imaginary events passively. Resting before the TV screen doesn't demand response from us. In the process of interaction between a person and television, the active role is played exactly by television. Your task comprises only switching over channels and nothing more. While reading a book, your brain turns letters into words, words into images; your imagination does its work by means of creating images, landscapes and living people. When you communicate with your friends, you must keep up the conversation. Do you feel the difference between all these activities and passive process of watching TV? Interaction between a man and television is always one-sided. It resembles a monologue between a deaf man and a dumb man.
Constant sitting before a TV screen leads to various health disturbances, such as indigestion, decline of immunity, visual impairment, etc. Do you want your children suffer from these disorders? The negative answer is obvious, but if television has replaced your friends, acquaintances and relatives and has become your main hobby, your child won't be able to escape this fate. That is why your fight with television should be started from yourself.
